Only e-TOLL as of October 1

1 October 2021

  • e-TOLL has become the only system enabling electronic tolls for toll roads in Poland.
  • Constructing it was much cheaper than the viaTOLL system, PLN 4.8 billion has been spent for it since 2011.
  • The government decided that the electronic toll would be 30% lower by the end of the year.

- The e-TOLL system is a modern solution based on satellite positioning technology, it is more convenient for drivers and more beneficial for the state than viaTOLL, as currently being shut down. The new system is one of the largest ICT projects implemented by the public administration, informs Magdalena Rzeczkowska, the head of the National Revenue Administration.

The system has covered the toll road network for heavy vehicles (approx. 3.7 thousand km) since June 24 this year. On the sections of the Konin-Stryków (A2) and Wrocław-Sośnica (A4) highways, the e-TOLL can also be used by users of light vehicles. E-TOLL has already registered more than 717 thousand vehicles. Thanks to the introduction of e-TOLL, since December 1, 2021, driving on state sections of highways will take place without stopping at gates.

The project of the new system was carried out jointly by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Chief Inspectorate of Road Transport, Critical Applications, the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (department responsible for digitization) and the Institute of Communications - National Research Institute.

September 30 was the last day of viaTOLL

September 30, 2021 was the last day of the transitional period for heavy vehicles, before two systems were in operation - the new e-TOLL and the old viaTOLL. The transport industry had more than three months to switch to the new system.

Since October 1 this year, the e-TOLL system has been the only electronic toll payment system. viaBOX and viaAUTO devices have also been inoperative.

Remember to deregister from the viaTOLL system. More information at

e-TOLL cheaper than viaTOLL

Its maintenance is cheaper than maintaining the viaTOLL system, it was based on traditional radio technology with extensive road infrastructure.

Since 2011, the total costs of viaTOLL have amounted to more than PLN 4.8 billion, including the construction cost of almost PLN 1.7 billion, and the cost of operation - over PLN 3.1 billion. Since the e-TOLL system is based on satellite positioning technology, it was possible to significantly reduce the costs related to the infrastructure. The project budget was estimated at PLN 448.1 million, of which approx. PLN 215.3 million has been spent so far.

e-TOLL offers several other benefits

The new system is a comprehensive online service without the need for visiting a customer service facility and signing a contract. System solutions allow you to view the history of fees and conveniently manage your account. They also enable choosing your device for transmitting geolocation data. e-TOLL saves money and time. This is an improvement in travel comfort.

Support for carriers and drivers

Since June 29, 2021, carriers have been able to benefit from a tax relief for equipping vehicles with OBU / ELS devices. The maximum amount is PLN 500 (net) for each vehicle of a taxpayer who made a drive in 2021 and paid for it electronically in the new system.

Until September 30 this year, there was a discount (25%) on tolls for heavy vehicles on toll roads and passenger cars on the state sections of the A2 and A4 highways. From October 1 to the end of 2021, users will pay 30% less for drives with e-TOLL.

In the event of a GPS device failure, the user will be able to pay for the drive without transferring data to the system and continue it without a working GPS device after declaring their route.

In exceptional circumstances, e.g., when a vehicle is involved in a rescue operation; it is used for transporting live animals, milk, medicines, dangerous goods, concrete, municipal waste; in the case of buses carrying passengers - declaring the drive will be possible up to 3 days after it took place.

We have provided users with an easier way to register with e-TOLL. It is intended for natural persons and sole proprietorships. The registration process has been significantly shortened and automated.

Prevention instead of sanctions

In the initial period after the viaTOLL has been shut down, mainly instructions will be applied, not punishment. This is the result of conclusions drawn from the implementation of the viaTOLL system. Each case will be analysed individually.

What is more, the option to pay the missing fee within 3 days has been introduced if there are funds on the prepaid account. In the viaTOLL system, a fine was imposed in such a case.
